The Lucky One
© Mark Jewett 2018
If you’ve got someone to love you and you’ve got someone to love
You can thank your lucky stars when you look up above
If you have friends it seems you have known since you were born
You’re lucky ‘cause you know they will be there in the morn
You’re a lucky one
You’re a lucky one
So live each day as if your life had just begun
You’re a lucky one
And when your time is done
You will still be a lucky one
If your best friend wags his tail when you walk through the door
You’re lucky just to be the one your friend could not love more
If a song can make you smile or a song can make you cry
You’re lucky ‘cause you know what it’s like to be alive
You’re a lucky one
You’re a lucky one
So live each day as if your life had just begun
You’re a lucky one
And when your time is done
You will still be a lucky one
Well, I tell myself these things whenever I begin to doubt
And to remind myself what life is all about
I’ve got someone to love me and I’ve got someone to love
And I always thank my lucky stars when I look up above
I’ve had all these blessings, yes I’ve had a real good run
I know that I’ve been lucky, yes... I’m the lucky one
I’m the lucky one
I’m the lucky one
I live each day as if my life had just begun
I’m the lucky one
And when my time is done
I will still be the lucky one

Saint Clair's Promise

Saint Clair’s Promise
© Mark Jewett 2018
It might have been the water
It might have been the light
Might have been a silent voice
Called out to me that night
Once I saw that vision
I could not look away
I had to stop to hear
What the river had to say
I saw steel bones of industry
I saw fire reach for the sky
I could sense the presence of Saint Clair
In the water flowing by
She spoke to me in whispers
On that peaceful summer night
And left me with the promise …
“Everything will be alright”
I turned the car around
Walked right up to the shore
Gazed out where wooden ships
Had sailed long before
Thought of how this place has changed
All that’s come and gone
How the river never dwells
The river just moves on
There’s wisdom for the taking
If you take the time
There’s comfort in the quiet
That’s where I found mine
I saw steel bones of industry
Fire reach for the sky
I could sense the presence of Saint Clair
In the water flowing by
She spoke to me in whispers
On that peaceful summer night
And left me with the promise …
“Everything will be alright”
I believe it was the water
I believe it was the light
I believe the voice of Saint Clair
Called to me that night

Guilty
written by Mark Jewett (BMI) & Amy Petty (ASCAP) © 2018
A guilty conscience never sleeps
It’s always on the run
You pray your soul to keep
In spite of all you’ve done
Shadows, lies and alibis
Are your only friends
No empty promises
Will change the way this ends
You will never be completely free
You will remain forever chained
You will never wash … away the shame
From a soul forever stained
Redemption holds the open door
You contemplate the deal
And know inside that it may be
The only way to heal
You will never be completely free
You will remain forever chained
You will never wash … away the shame
From a soul forever stained
Bow your head, confess unsaid
Promise to redeem
Submit to Mercy’s hand
For a simple chance to dream
As you fall asleep tonight
Your new life’s just begun
But when the morning light appears
Promise comes undone
You’re still the guilty one
You will never be completely free
As she cries there in her grave
You can never wash away the shame
From a soul forever stained
From a soul forever stained

Connoisseur

If Taco Tuesday happened every day
I’d have only happy words to say
I’d have a nice Mojito, two tacos, one burrito
I’m a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
Armando’s makes delicious chimichangas
So grande, you might say humongous
But If you want something muy bueno
It’s the chile relleno
When you’re a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
I’m a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
From places where the kitchen is fairly clean
That’s where they make the best
You can have the rest
I’m a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
Take care when the menu says “¡Cuidado!”
Or el baño could soon be ocupado
Caliente means it’s hot
Suave means it’s not
Now you’re a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
Pollo, carnitas and carne asada
Varieties of tacos I like a-lotta
Don’t try to fool me by serving one flat
And telling me it’s tos-tada (It's just a flat taco!)
I’m a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
From places where the kitchen is fairly clean
That’s where they make the best
You can have the rest
I’m a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine
We are connoisseurs of Mexican cuisine

The Only Thing
© Mark Jewett 2018
Time is a messenger of joy and grief
It can leave you bent and broke or rich beyond belief
With memories of love
Sunsets and stars above
Time is a thief and a giver of grace
Time draws battle lines and lines on your face
Lines that tell a story
Every heartache and glory
Time has always been here
Time will always be
A mystery to me
Time has no conscience
Time has no fear
It’s the only thing
That brought us here
Time attends the wounded ‘til every wound is healed
I don’t think we understand the power time can wield
The power to carry on
To be right here and then be gone
Time has always been here
Time will always be
A mystery to me
Time has no conscience
Time has no fear
It’s the only thing
That brought us here
Time is a spirit, no shadow, no face
An apparition that we try but fail to embrace
Time has always been here
Time will always be
A mystery to me
Time has no conscience
Time has no fear
It’s the only thing
That brought us here

Michigan Snow Shovelin’ Blues
© Mark Jewett 2016
The snow is falling and it’s heavy and wet
I just got up, ain't even had my coffee yet
When the weather man said you'd better get set
You’ve got some work to do
‘Cuz when it snows in The Mitten it weighs a ton
And shoveling that stuff, it ain’t no fun
And there ain’t no rest until the work gets done
And that gives me the blues
Trade your flips flops for good snow shoes
Hear about the blizzard on the evenin’ news
In the winter here, you've got to pay your dues
With those Michigan snow shovelin’ blues
My joints are sore and my back is achin'
And I'm kinda concerned 'bout all this Advil I'm takin’
Yeah, shovelin’ snow is way harder than rakin'
I’m here to tell you
Trade your flips flops for good snow shoes
Hear about the blizzard on the evenin’ news
In the winter here, you've got to pay your dues
With the Michigan snow shovelin’ blues
Oh… at my friend Johnny's place, north o’ Kalkaska
They get more snow than parts of Alaska
That much snow, you've got to respect
They say it's due to the Lake Effect
It's a blessing and curse when it's thirty below
'Cuz there's a point where it just gets too cold to snow
And it's shovelin’, not snow, that bugs me so
And gives me the blues
Trade your flips flops for good snow shoes
Hear about the blizzard on the evenin’ news
In the winter here, you've got to pay your dues
With those Michigan snow shovelin’ blues
Oh, from Detroit to Niles up to Epoufette
A little farther north up to Marquette
'Cross the Gitche Gumee shore to Grand Marais,
Somebody's gonna shovel snow today

Warren Zevon’s Birthday
© Mark Jewett 2019
My father died on Warren Zevon’s birthday
I’m still not sure exactly what that means
So different, yet the same, neither knew the other’s name
Both had a profound effect on me
Dad served his county in the second world war
When he was only 20 years of age
He kept it all inside, a place where he could hide
Secrets he carried to his grave
Warren had an appetite for living
Living large, a thing he did so well
Like a feral buckeroo in some alcoholic Xanadu
He rode the Double E right straight through Hell
They shared a favorite drink they called "The Next One"
And humor dark and dry, the way I like it too
Both loved to tell a story and both could do it well
I miss their stories now, I really do
My father died on Warren Zevon’s birthday
I’m still not sure exactly what that means
So different, yet the same, neither knew the other’s name
Both had a profound effect on me
My father spoke volumes with his silence
Like he knew I could do better than he'd done
Now I hold up the flame and carry on his name
And I am proud to be the one
My father died on Warren Zevon’s birthday
I’m still not sure exactly what that means
So different, yet the same, neither knew the other’s name
Both had a profound effect on me

Voices
I hear voices
Voices when I’m sleeping
Voices when I wake
Voices when I get the feeling
I’ve had all that I can take
Voices
I hear voices
They tell me not to worry
Everything will be okay
They tell me not to hurry
Not to wish the time away
Do you suppose these voices
Have important things to say?
Do you suppose these voices
Might know a better way?
Voices
I hear voices
Voices remind me
When I could be more kind
And life would be much better
If we leave the hate behind
Do you suppose these voices
Have important things to say?
Do you suppose these voices
Might know a better way?
Voices
I hear voices
Voices when I’m sleeping
Voices when I wake
Voices when I get the feeling
I’ve had all that I can take

Sophia

Sophia came into the world
Sophia opened up her eyes
Laid her head... upon her mama’s shoulder
And forever changed our lives
Sophia came in her own time
In no hurry to proceed
She and her mama traveled everywhere together
Mama satisfied her every need
Sophia now owns her daddy’s heart
She’s holding it for keeps
They dream of everything they will do together
He loves to hold her as she sleeps
He said, “Come on, Sophia, let’s go see the world.”
There are so many things to see
Today, you are our amazing little girl
But you can be anything... anything you want to be
And Mama said, “Come on, Sophia, we’re gonna change the world”
We’ll be strong and we’ll be free
I’ll be right here if you need anything
‘Cuz you are everything … you are everything to me
Sophia came into the world
Sophia opened up her eyes
Laid her head... upon her mama’s shoulder
And forever changed our lives
